Heel pain
February 19, 2025
Soreness on the back or underside of the heel that may make walking uncomfortable or very hard.
Rest. And avoid running, standing for a long time and walking on hard surfaces. Put ice on the heel for up to 20 minutes, three times a day. Try arch supports that can be bought without a prescription to help relieve pain.
See a healthcare professional immediately for:
- Serious pain and swelling.
- Heel pain caused by injury.
- A problem with flexing or bending the foot downward.
- No way to walk comfortably.
- Fever associated with numbness or tingling in the heel.
Make an appointment to see a healthcare professional if heel pain:
- Happens at rest.
- Lasts or worsens over a few weeks or more despite home care.
- Limits the ability to work or do daily tasks.
