Leg or arm pain from a lack of blood flow to the muscles. Usually starts during exercise and ends with rest. Often due to peripheral artery disease.

Follow a heart-healthy lifestyle to help prevent claudication. Eat a healthy diet, get regular exercise, don't smoke and limit alcohol. Manage blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol.

See a healthcare professional immediately if:

  • Severe pain occurs or pain doesn't go away.
  • Legs or arms feel numb.
  • Skin changes color.
  • Sores don't heal.

Make an appointment with your care team if:

  • Pain in legs or arms happens during exercise.
  • Sores form on legs, arms, feet or hands.
