Self-care includes taking antacids, eating smaller meals more often, chewing food well, losing weight, and avoiding trigger foods, such as fatty foods, and carbonated drinks.

See a healthcare professional immediately if:

  • Shortness of breath or chest pain.
  • Severe pain.
  • Loss of appetite or weight loss that is not on purpose.
  • Black, tarry stools.
  • Vomiting, especially vomiting with blood.

Make an appointment to see a healthcare professional if:

  • Symptoms last more than two weeks.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Nonprescription medicines don't help.
