Topic

A bacterial infection of the skin and soft tissue.

Buruli ulcer is caused by infection with the organism Mycobacterium ulcerans. It's found mainly in tropical areas, including West Africa and Australia.

Buruli ulcer often starts as a painless swelling on the arms, legs, or face. Large ulcers develop over time, usually on the arms or legs.

Treatment involves antibiotics. Left untreated, it can lead to lasting disfigurement and disability.
