Constipation

Infrequent passing of stool and having small, hard-to-pass stool.
Drink plenty of fluids. Eat more high-fiber foods, including fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Try to get regular physical activity on most days of the week. Stool softeners or laxatives that are available without a prescription may help.
See a healthcare professional immediately if:
- Severe stomach pain and bloating don't go away.
- Unable to pass stool.
Make an appointment to see a healthcare professional if:
- Passing stool fewer than three times in a week.
- Often straining to pass stool.
- Bleeding from rectum.
