A dry, sore, irritated, or cracked nipple.

Fissure of nipple refers to dry, sore, irritated, or cracked nipples. This occurs in runners and weightlifters, from chafing against clothing. It also occurs when breast-feeding.

Symptoms include soreness, crusting, oozing, and bleeding of the nipple.

A purified lanolin or a hydrogel dressing can soothe cracked nipples and help them retain moisture. If the nipple becomes infected, an antibiotic cream may help.
